Eight chosen fans from the eight host cities in Poland and Ukraine will regularly give their insights into the preparations for EURO 2012, and critically comment on the current status quo. Their inside knowledge will allow them to give you the lowdown on the behind the scenes stories, tips, curiosities, fan activities, and whatever else catches their eye, from the serious to the more light-hearted.
Lviv is preparing for the summer even though it's bitterly cold just now. Oleh Soldatenko tells us about the new public transport system which has Lviv citizens confused. On the football side of things, after winning against Austria, Lviv fans are sure that they are the real lucky charm for the national team.
A new scheme of public transport
From January 1, 2012 a new public transport scheme in Lviv was introduced. I must say that in Lviv, as in other large cities of Ukraine, most of people travel by shuttle bus, which is popularly referred to (and an unusual for a foreign word) as a "marshrutka" :-).
Lviv city authorities invested a lot of money to a French company for the development of a new transport concept that radically changed the numbering of routes and public transport but at the same time they forgot to warn the Lviv citizens. Because of the unusual harsh frosts and the new changes people now need twice as much time to get where they need to go. Busy getting ready to welcome guests from around the world in June, our city government has forgotten to take care of the inhabitants of the city! We hope that by the beginning of the EURO 2012 the situation will be normal and people (whether local or our guests) will know where they need to go using the new public transport system. Today in Lviv public transportation costs two hryvnias (around 20 eurocents). We hope that unlike the majority of services that will rise in price during the EURO 2012, this price will remain the same.
On a cheerier note: The official website of the host city published an article on the accommodation situation at EURO 2012 – which is better than rumours would have.
Football and supporters news
After the Ukrainian national football team beat the Austrian national team in our new stadium in November last year, all Ukrainian football fans and players of the national team regretted the fact that our team will not play in Lviv Euro 2012 group stage matches. Seven games in Lviv would surely mean seven victories? The Lviv fans played a very important role in the match result, at least that's how we feel. :-). We believe this because only Lviv supporters can so desperately and sometimes crazily support our team.
At the beginning of March the second round of the Ukrainian football championship will start. As FC Karpaty has reached the quarter-final of the Ukrainian National Cup our fans hope that Karpaty will win this year; the first and the last time FC Karpaty won the National Cup was 43 years ago.
On May 14, Karpaty supporters celebrate the anniversary of their first away match 25 years ago. This will be celebrated on that date with an initiative from NGO "Karpaty" in Lviv - a Fan Day including an exhibition of rarities of that time, a football match between veteran players and fans from different generations and a party with concert.
